Yoga Flow for Sports with Amanda Hamilton

Amanda is an ultra-runner, sports massage therapist AND manages a research team for a very well known spirits company. I remember the first time I met her being hugely impressed by her achievements. She’d come in for a chat about joining our teacher training course in the summer of 2018. I only had a couple of places left and she had to make a decision fast. I’m super glad she chose to join us!

Here’s a little about Amanda (in her own words)…

“I’ve been practising yoga for about 4 or 5 years now, after previously writing it off as a sedentary pastime for old ladies who couldn’t do ‘real’ activities and then after finding hot yoga, and vinyasa flow, I was lucky enough to complete my Yoga Teacher Training with Merchant City Yoga in 2019 and developed a huge love for ashtanga.

The reason I turned to yoga was to improve my physical capability for the benefit of another of my passions – as an ultra runner. I’ve been running long distances (slowly) on the trails since about 2012 (when I mainly did it to prove a physio who told me I’d never run again wrong….) completing some iconic races in both Scotland (95 mile West Highland Way race, 53 mile Highland Fling, 73 mile Great Glen Way to name a few) and in the alps (CCC by UTMB 101KM and a LOT of hills!).Yoga has helped me improve many things including my core strength, and awareness (and correction!) of tensions and imbalances in my body. It’s been highly effective in making gains in my flexibility, lessening the risk of injury and it has also improved my focus and balance meaning I’ve fallen over on the trails far less recently!

By day I manage a Category Development (research) team for a premium spirits company, which I love, although it can be very stressful at times. I’m also a qualified sports massage therapist and regularly try to help my clients maintain and improve their sporting performance and physical well-being. The other benefit that comes from my yoga practice that I was never looking for initially is supporting my mental health and reducing my stress levels.

I teach vinyasa or Hatha classes in a corporate and public setting (via Zoom at the moment) and continue to enhance my skills with regular training courses and self-development.”

As one of our graduates I’m really proud of Amanda. Her commitment to her own practice as well as the practice of teaching is a reflection of her determination and self awareness. I hope you enjoy this class with her – it’s focus is to help those who participate in sport but it really can be enjoyed by everyone. It’s all yoga, after all!

A regular yoga practice can be hugely beneficial to athletes and sports people. Yoga can help you build strength and flexibility, it can help improve your balance, coordination, focus and breathing. There are loads of benefits! You’ll be amazed at the difference a regular yoga practice can make to your sport – running, cycling, golf…
