Yin Yoga for releasing tension with Fiona McGill

Fiona brought so much colour to our teacher training weekends! I love her take on life and her sense of humour and both shine through here in her teaching.

Fiona tells us a little about the practice she’s sharing with us and how she came to find yoga…

“My day job has essentially involved sitting at a desk for the last 30 years, with sitting in a car each day as my regular commute. When you add sitting on flights whilst travelling for holidays, then at restaurant tables or pubs when catching up with friends, I notice I spend a considerable amount of my time in that fixed seated position and I’m guessing I’m not the only one.

The practice I’m sharing takes into account any tightness between the shoulder blades, nagging lower back pain and tightness in the hips and quads; all potential consequences of a sedentary lifestyle. I’ve added a few simple neck stretches too, to try and combat the downstream impact of looking at screens on a regular basis.

I started doing yoga 14 years ago when I had some trauma in my life. It helped me a lot and the benefits came twofold; mind and body.

Over the years, in asking fellow practitioners why they got into yoga, I’ve noticed that trauma or a significant life event is what brings a lot of folks to a mat for the first time. My aim is to try and get more people involved before they reach that low point, if possible; more care than repair so to speak.

Since completing my Yoga Teacher Training at MCY in August 2019, I’ve been sharing both my yin and ashtanga practice at my local yoga studio; they supported me immensely during my training and it’s great to be involved in the community they’ve created.

I was also lucky enough to share practice at a Retreat in Ibiza last year, again with support from a wonderful teacher and friend, however Covid-19 has scuppered our plans for Portugal 2020.

I share my practice times and locations on my FaceBook and Instagram pages, under Red Fox Yoga – thankfully the hairdressing rules were relaxed just in time, or I may have been forced to change to Silver Fox Yoga!”

We’re big fans of Yin Yoga here at MCY – I reckon there’s no such thing as too much! I hope you find what you need in Fiona’s class…
