Recovery, yoga & inspiration - Guest post by Alanna Dearden
For the last couple of years I’ve been fortunate to be able to teach a yoga class for the North East Recovery Cafe, a non-profit peer led voluntary organisation.
In a local parish church hall in the North of Glasgow a space is offered to support people who are in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. As I walk in I'm always struck by the energy and activity the space offers. Bustling with people it's a warm bright place…
Chatting Ashtanga Yoga With Rose Ann McKean, ‘The Chai Sessions’
In this session I'm chatting with Rose Ann who teaches our morning Mysore programme here at the studio.
We chat Ashtanga - where to start, commitment to the practice, the struggle, challenging postures, the difference between guided classes and Mysore-style, managing your energy and taking ownership of your practice.

Celebrating the Women of MCY
International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
This year’s campaign theme is #ChooseToChallenge. When we challenge stereotypes, bias and inequality we create change and help build a more inclusive world.
While we’re maybe not directly challenging gender bias and inequality with our celebration here of the women of MCY, we are definitely challenging the common social media portrayal of the type of women who practise yoga.
Our Wonderful Bodies
How wonderful are our bodies?
They heal, they persevere, they lift heavy weights, and they even find that extra physical strength and speed of reaction when our dear ones are in danger. We put our bodies through their paces, and yet, when they are screaming at us to slow down or stop, we just shrug our shoulders and keep going with what we are doing.
So why do we struggle so much to listen?
Getting started, being yourself: the fears & worries we all share - Nicola Park, ‘The Chai Sessions’
In this session I'm chatting with Nicola, who has been teaching our Monday evening beginners class here at the studio for many years.
Nicola does an amazing job at making sure everyone feels comfortable and relaxed before, during and after class. She really understands what it's like to be a beginner and even shares her own funny story about an experience she had in our chat.

Has Hatha Yoga fallen out of fashion? - Patricia Galavis, ‘The Chai Sessions’
Anyone who has been to Merchant City Yoga on a Sunday knows how much I love catching up with everyone over a cup of my freshly brewed spiced chai. These Sunday chai sessions really bring everyone together, a true celebration of friendship, community and connection.
As these covid restrictions continue I want to try and capture some of that magic and share it with you at home. So I've invited some familiar faces from our MCY family to chat with me online over a cuppa. I'm affectionately calling them 'The Chai Sessions'.
2020, a year to remember
It’s been a difficult year.
I’ve heard said a few times now that 2020 is a year to forget. But I think that’s completely wrong. I think 2020 should be a year that we remember. And remember for a long time to come.
It’s been such a year of fear, suffering and loss. Of kindness, compassion, gratitude and hope. Of learning, adapting and creativity. We shouldn’t forget any of that.
