Injuries, the practice, teaching from experience - Ana Costa, 'The Chai Sessions'

Ana’s been teaching a weekly Vinyasa Flow class here at MCY since 2016, and also teaches with me on our 200 hour yoga teacher training programme. Over that time I’ve been delighted to watch her grow and become more skilled as a teacher dedicated to supporting her students.

These past few months every time Ana and I get together we end up talking about injuries! In particular, we've been comparing notes on our own shoulder injuries and chatting about how injury has not only changed our practice but also the impact it's had on how we teach yoga postures.

I thought it'd be fun to get together over a cuppa and share some of our chat with you all.

My own shoulder injury has been ongoing for the last two years now and Ana has been working with nerve pain after fracturing her collarbone seven years ago.

We chat about:

  • Discovering what really brings you to your practice;

  • Identifying patterns of movement in our practice that aren't so helpful anymore;

  • Active and passive stretching;

  • Playing the long game and finding what's safe for your body.

Ana says…

"Even if it's different from what we've been taught, that doesn't mean it's wrong. It's what's right for my body and the situation I'm in."

Pop the kettle on, get yourself comfy and come and join us.

I hope you enjoy our chat.

You’ll find Ana teaching Vinyasa Flow in-studio and online every Wednesday at 6pm. Head over to our timetable to book.

And don’t miss Ana’s upcoming Smart Movement Workshop on Saturday 30th October (10am - 12.30pm) here at our beautiful Merchant City Yoga studios. It’ll help you better understand the shoulder joint and how the different cogs move and interact. BOOK HERE

If you have any questions email me or find us on social media.

‘The Chai Sessions’

Anyone who has been to Merchant City Yoga on a Sunday knows how much I love catching up with everyone over a cup of my freshly brewed spiced chai. These Sunday chai sessions really bring everyone together, a true celebration of friendship, community and connection.

I want to try and capture some of that magic and share it with you at home. So I've invited some familiar faces from our MCY family to chat with me online over a cuppa. I'm affectionately calling them 'The Chai Sessions'.
