Mantra: The Maha Mrtyunjaya
In this session, you will explore the Maha Mrtyunjaya mantra – a Vedic mantra dedicated to Lord Shiva, specifically to his manifestation as Tryambaka, the three-eyed one. It’s chanted for protection, healing and to overcome the fear of death and is particularly auspicious to chant towards the Winter Solstice.
The Maha Mrityunjaya is powerful and energising too, which balances the sluggishness of the cold season. To warm up, you will go through the main sounds of the Sanskrit language, in which many of the classic mantras are recited. You’ll explore the rhythm, meaning and philosophy behind one of the best known mantras of the yogic tradition. By the end of class you will know this mantra and will be able to practise it in your own time.
Mantra is a core practice in the Indian tradition. It is often thought of as a sacred sound with powerful effects on the mind, body, and breath. It is related to flow of life force and has a balancing effect. Through its deep listening and meditative effects, it will take you deeper into the state of yoga.
This class is suitable for everyone and no knowledge of Sanskrit or any singing skills are required (mantra is not singing!). By the end of the session, you will:
Understand the pronunciation of the main sounds of Sanskrit. This will help you release tension in the neck, jaw and face area
Develop listening skills, which in turn will lead you to a deeper meditative awareness
Learn a classic mantra which you can take into your everyday life and will sustain you to create a chanting practice
