Thursday evenings 7.30-9pm from 19 September 2024
It can be difficult to know where to begin learning Ashtanga Yoga. That’s why we offer this specially structured in-person four week course where you’ll learn the basics of this dynamic style of yoga in a relaxed, informal setting.
It’s perfect for complete beginners to yoga or anyone new to Ashtanga yoga who’d like to explore and experience this style of yoga and its benefits.
But this course isn’t just for beginners. If you’ve been practising for a while it’s a great way to revisit the foundations of the practice. A good understanding of these foundations is essential as your own practice of Ashtanga Yoga develops.
In this four week course you will:
Learn Surya Namaskara (sun salutations) A & B;
Explore the fundamentals of the standing postures;
Be introduced to some of the seated postures with adaptations if required;
Learn the correct breathing techniques;
Experience a little of the Mysore style assisted self practice approach to practising Ashtanga;
Begin to understand the context and philosophy of the Ashtanga yoga method.
Over the course we’ll break down the sequence of postures. Each week we’ll work on a bit more of the sequence building on prior weeks and you’ll be given homework to practise between classes!
You’ll gain the tools, techniques and confidence to deepen your understanding and practice of Ashtanga yoga. Once you’ve completed the course you’ll be ready to attend any of the regular classes on the timetable here at MCY.
Ashtanga yoga will help you move and breathe more efficiently. It’s physically challenging and will help you increase strength and improve flexibility. It will help you feel calmer, clearer and more able to navigate the ups and downs of day to day life.
Thinking you need to be flexible before you start yoga is a little bit like thinking you need to be able to drive before taking driving lessons. This course is a great place to start, come as you are and yoga will help you do the rest!
