This one-day workshop will introduce you to the theory and practice of the Alexander Technique in a way that is relaxed and interactive. Everyone is welcome and no prior knowledge of either the Alexander Technique or yoga is required. For yoga practitioners (or those looking to begin a yoga
practice) there will be plenty of opportunity to explore ways that the Alexander Technique can help improve the quality and enjoyment of your practice!
The Alexander Technique is a simple skill that anyone can learn at any age. In this one-day workshop you will learn some life changing principles which when practically applied in your day to day life can bring you many benefits.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Session 1
The day will start with an introduction to some of the basic principles of the
Alexander Technique. Working experientially (as a group and also individually) with Sue, your starting point will be to observe how you are sitting in your chair. Sometimes Sue will guide you by gentle use of their hands to help you become more conscious of your movement behaviours and habits.
Session 2
In this session you’ll look at some common misconceptions about your body and the way you are put together. You will explore ways in which some of these unconscious beliefs and ideas can indirectly and adversely affect the ways you think and move.
Practical lessons will include more everyday movement activities like getting
up from our chairs, standing and walking.
Sessions 3 and 4 (with a short break in between sessions)
Session 3 will start with a discussion about ‘constructive rest’, and you will be invited to experience a floor based lying down practice which will give your body and nervous system the opportunity to rest and quieten down. This is a simple practice which is very beneficial and it can be done at any time when you feel the need to restore and rejuvenate yourself.
Our lives involve us in many different kinds of activities. How we go about our activities affects our physical and mental well-being. In the afternoon sessions you be encouraged to get curious about the habitual ways you perform common activities which can result in unnecessary tension and discomfort. Working at a computer or using a mobile phone are good examples of these kinds of activities!
You will also be invited to explore your own chosen movement activities … which may of course be yoga!
By the end of the day you will have gained a good understanding of how you can use Alexander’s principles in your everyday life.
Workshop Cost £85

COMMON QUESTIONS:
Do I need to wear special exercise clothing?
No, just wear something you feel comfortable in.
I have a sore back and stiff neck and I won’t be able to do any exercises, can I still come?
Yes, as long as you have consulted your doctor and there is no medical reason for you not to attend, you are very welcome to come along. A study in the British Medical Journal on back pain found the The Alexander Technique to be effective in relieving back pain.
I am thinking of starting yoga, will this workshop be useful to me?
Yes this workshop will give you a good solid foundation on which to build a very enjoyable yoga practice.
I don’t like people putting hands on me, can I have lessons without being touched?
Yes, you can still have lessons with Sue without her using her hands.
I am shy and am worried that I will have to speak or get up in front of the group … do I have to?
No you do not have to participate in these ways and you are welcome to come along and participate in whatever way you choose.
I have never heard of the Alexander Technique, how can I find out more about it?
You can go to Sue’s website (www.suebarclay.com) where you can read more about what the Alexander Technique is, and follow links to registered Alexander Technique organisations.
