Where to begin? Learn Ashtanga Yoga with Michael
It can be difficult to know where to begin learning Ashtanga Yoga. That’s why we started our Ashtanga Yoga Beginners class on a Wednesday evening.
If you’d like to move through the sequence at a slower pace and get more detailed instruction, this is the class for you.
You’ll learn the basics of this dynamic style of yoga in a relaxed, informal setting. Gaining the tools, techniques and confidence to deepen your understanding and practice of Ashtanga Yoga.
But this class isn’t just for beginners. If you’ve been practicing for a while it’s a great way to revisit the foundations of the practice. A good understanding of these foundations is essential as your own practice of Ashtanga Yoga develops.
We’re so lucky to have Michael Lynch teaching our Ashtanga Yoga Beginners class here at MCY.
Before Michael discovered yoga, he was a competitive distance runner and an enthusiastic, rather than talented, footballer (his words, not mine!). He began practicing yoga regularly as part of his rehab after a serious knee injury.
In the video below, Michael tells us what got him started with yoga and how the Ashtanga Yoga practice brought it all to life for him. Give it a watch!
What Michael has to say about his Beginners Class
Michael also had this to say about his Ashtanga Yoga Beginners class…
“I like students to feel welcome and included when they come my class. There is no expectation or requirement to have any knowledge or experience of any yoga practice. I always try to make you feel as comfortable as possible but at the same time I like to challenge you.
My hope is that you take away and build on your knowledge of the postures and techniques, especially those relating to breath and movement. Also a sense of achievement and wellbeing.
This class is for beginners to the Ashtanga yoga practice but it is also useful for more experienced students who wish to practice postures from Primary Series at a slower pace while focussing on the breath.
Each class follows the structure of Ashtanga yoga’s primary series. We focus on Uttanasana (standing forward bend), sun salutation A and B, the standing sequence and transition to the seated sequence with basic vinyasa.
I also add Malasana (yoga squat) for leg strengthening and as preparation for some of the more challenging seated asana of primary series. Then we work on backbends before finishing and rest.
I demonstrate all postures with a lot of verbal instruction regarding movement and use of breath. So the emphasis is on posture, breath and focus as the main elements of practice.
Overall, my message is to turn up and do what you can without stressing about what others are doing or feeling judged. Come along and join us, it would be wonderful to see you in class on a Wednesday evening!”
If you’d like to learn Ashtanga Yoga from scratch or build on your existing practice, you can join Michael every Wednesday at 6pm.
