Understanding the Ashtanga Opening Chant
One of the ways we can show our respect for the traditional teachings and cultural origins of yoga is to explore the meaning of the verses we chant to begin our practice.

There’s more to yoga than the stuff we do on our yoga mats. Understanding yoga philosophy, the ideas and thinking behind yoga, really helps us get the most out of our practice. And if you teach yoga it can really enhance and enrich the messages you’re sharing too.
Looking backwards to move forwards
Last summer I took a whole month out and travelled to Boulder, Colorado to study and practice with legendary yoga teacher Richard Freeman and his wife Mary Taylor at the yoga studio they founded, The Yoga Workshop. It was a 200 hour programme which included practice, teaching methodology, adjusting, philosophical study, chanting, silent meditation, anatomy and cadaver labs! In other words A LOT.
