Close to gurupūrṇimā, the festivity that honours teachers, we learn to pronounce this chant correctly, looking at its rhythm and meaning, as well as adding an exta verse dedicated to the sage Patañjali. This class will be suitable even if you know the chant, as we will be delving into the depths of how to read Sanskrit IAST transliteration (which is a great skill to have!) and look at how this mantra can shape your āsana practice.

Mantra is a core practice in the Indian tradition. It is often through of as sacred sounds with powerful effects in the mind, body and breath. It is related to flow of life force and has a balancing effect. Through its deep listening and meditative effects, it will take you deeper into the state of yoga.

In these sessions, we will explore well-known mantras, placing them in the context of other yogic practices, as well as linking them seasonally. In each session, we will go through the main sounds of the Sanskrit language, in which many of the classic mantras are recited. We will explore the rhythm, meaning and philosophy behind each mantra. These classes is suitable for everyone and no knowledge of Sanskrit or any singing skills are required (mantra is not signing!). By the end of the sessions, you will:

  • Understand the pronunciation of the main sounds of Sanskrit. This will release tension in the neck, jaw and face area.

  • Experience the energetic power of Sanskrit chanting through guided practice.

  • Develop listening skills, which in turn will lead you to a deeper meditative awareness.

  • Learn how to start and sustain a personal chanting practice, including practical tips and benefits.
