Workshop for Teachers: A Mindful Approach to Teaching Yoga

12.30-4.30pm Friday 19 February 2027

Join senior ashtanga yoga teacher Scott Johnson for a 4-hour training designed for yoga teachers, Mysore practitioners and trainees who want to deepen their understanding of hands-on teaching.

This workshop blends theory, discussion and practical exploration, offering a grounded introduction to the inner and outer skills required to support students with clarity and care.

The afternoon includes:

1. Understanding the Kleshas (1 to 1.5 hrs)

A lecture and group discussion on the five kleshas, the subtle patterns that shape how we see and respond to students. This session explores how awareness, compassion and clarity create the foundation for safe and skillful teaching.

2. Instruction, Adjustment Theory and Practical Assists (2.5 hrs)

A detailed exploration of hands-on assisting. Participants will learn how to see postures more clearly, how to offer grounded and supportive touch, and how to work with students of all bodies and abilities. The focus is on relational, sensitive and anatomically aware teaching.

You will learn:

  • How to recognise internal patterns that influence your teaching

  • Principles of safe and effective hands-on assists

  • How to read bodies with more nuance and spaciousness

  • How to meet students where they are with confidence and care

  • Practical skills for supporting students in a Mysore or led-class setting

This workshop is suitable for teachers, teacher trainees and committed practitioners who want to deepen their understanding of the art of assisting.

Scott’s approach is steady, compassionate and grounded in over 20 years of teaching Mysore-style Ashtanga yoga. His emphasis is always on clarity, presence and the human connection at the heart of yoga practice.

He says “I look forward to sharing this rich afternoon of learning with you.”

A Mindful Approach to Ashtanga Yoga - Weekend Workshop Series

Join senior teacher Scott Johnson for a weekend of practice and exploration grounded in mindfulness, movement and the deeper principles that sit beneath Ashtanga yoga.

These two workshops can be taken together or individually. Both sessions weave clear philosophical teaching with embodied asana practice, helping you connect more intimately to your body, breath and inner experience.

……….

Workshop 1 | The Body as Feedback: Movement and Stillness
2-5pm Saturday 20 February 2027

In this session, you’ll explore the first foundation of mindfulness, the body. Scott will guide you through the teachings of the Buddha and Patanjali that help us return to the immediacy of physical experience, the breath and the subtle intelligence of the body.

Patanjali on Asana: How Do We Find Space In The Body?

The first hour will be a presentation, lecture and discussion on asana in the yoga sutra. We will see that the way that Patanjali asks us to notice the body is with a steady and spacious awareness

Technique

The last two hours of the session will move into embodied exploration, using vinyasa and mindful movement to notice:

  • How movement arises from stillness

  • How breath shapes the way we experience each posture

  • How the body communicates through sensation

  • How spacious awareness deepens the quality of practice

This workshop invites you to reconnect with your physical self as a source of feedback, clarity and presence.

……….

Workshop 2 | The Feel of Things: Forward Bending and Backbending Awareness
2-5pm Sunday 21 February 2027

This workshop focuses on the second foundation of mindfulness, the felt sense. We look at how sensation and emotional tone shape our choices on the mat and in life.

Patanjali on Prana: Four ways of noticing breathing

This first hour will be a presentation, lecture and discussion session on prana and the yoga sutra. The emphasis will be how it focuses on the breath and importantly, the energetic flow of the body. It will help you begin to make you mare aware of the nature of how you move in practice.

Technique

The last two hours of the session will look through forward bends from the Primary Series and backbends from the Intermediate Series. You will explore:

  • How different postures evoke different physical and emotional responses

  • How we can meet challenge, openness and vulnerability with steadiness

  • How sensation becomes a guide for deeper awareness

  • How mindfulness transforms the quality of what we feel and how we move

This session helps you recognise the subtle feeling patterns that arise in practice and teaches supportive ways to meet them with clarity and compassion.

……….

Who these workshops are for:

  • Practitioners of all levels

  • Students interested in the philosophical foundations of yoga

  • Anyone wanting to explore practice with more awareness, gentleness and curiosity

Join us for a rich day of connection, learning and embodied mindfulness.
