A 4 day Ashtanga Yoga Self Practice and Workshop Immersion

Thursday 16 February - Sunday 19 February 2023

For many of us our yoga practice is deeply important to us. It can make us feel like we’re flying, and yet there are so many things that come up through the process of practice itself.  It’s these processes, those things that challenge us, that can be the most profound.

Wherever you are, whatever you bring, this Mysore Yoga immersion will shine a light on your practice, illuminating what’s coming up, and explore different ways of moving through it, whether you are working with an injury, feel a little stuck in your practice, or feel like you’re flying.

This immersion is for all practitioners of yoga to discover their own way of practicing this profound system of yoga. To see how the wider teachings of yoga and mindfulness can deeply influence your practice.

Scott will draw on his 18 years of experience teaching Mysore Ashtanga Yoga and Mindfulness to shine a light on your yoga practice and help you discover something fresh…

The immersion will include:

  • Mindfulness Meditation

  • Pranayama/breathing techniques

  • Ashtanga yoga - Self practice and guided classes

  • Chanting

  • Philosophy

  • Movement technique and theory

What you will gain from this 4 day immersion?

Over the intensive you will gain insight into your own patterns of practice and how to move in your own unique way. If working with pain or injuries there will be fresh light on how to alleviate and work with these issues. We will use the wider context of anatomy, mindfulness and philosophy to see how we can notice things in a fresh way. This will also help you to see the practice of yoga in a wider context to your life.

Mysore style Assisted Self Practice with Scott Johnson

Session 1 - 6-7.30am Thursday & Friday / 7.30-9am Saturday & Sunday

Session 2 - 7.30-9am Thursday & Friday / 9-10.30am Saturday & Sunday

Scott believes that developing a self practice takes participation, commitment, learning and growth. Such self practice fosters the individual responsibility of the practitioner learning the practice for themselves.

With individual support and guidance, and the deep teacher-student relationship developed in this self practice method, practice evolves slowly over time, breath by breath, as an individual becomes stronger in their own time.

Workshop 1 | Where Philosophy Meets The Body
2-4pm Saturday 18 February 2023

Uncovering the physical, psychological and spiritual aspects of an ashtanga yoga practice.

The foundational aspect of yoga practice always comes back to this: we are cultivating deeper layers of awareness into what it means to be human. And even though the yoga we know and practice the most is physical, we are always cultivating two other aspects of practice: the psychological and the spiritual.

This workshop will look at the physical practice of ashtanga yoga from the lens of yoga philosophy. We will see that if we can integrate common philosophical principles into our movement practice then balance, alignment and a deeper felt sense awareness will be uncovered.

This workshop is for everyone.

Workshop 2 | The Art of Transitioning
2.30-4.30pm Sunday 19 February 2023

Slowing down the practice to find the deeper movement

The ashtanga yoga practice is based on vinyasa, the art of movement and sequence. We will work on developing, through the lens of the movements of the primary and intermediate series, the ability to see ourselves through the process of vinyasa,. How we experience insight into how breath and the fluid movement in ashtanga yoga wakes us up to what it means to practice and what practice actually is.

We will see that the paradox of an ashtanga yoga practice is the ability to slow down and refine movement into one of transitioning our own unique patterns.

We will also take a gentle look at how the Sanskrit counting method holds the practice together. We will look to see how the count is the basis of realisation of the present moment in practice and work on techniques in particular postures and vinyasas to allow us to let go of effort.
