WE DON’T HAVE ALL THE
ANSWERS BUT WE DO
KNOW ABOUT YOGA.

OUR MOST POPULAR FAQ’S

Where do we start? Yoga can mean many things to many people. And it’s not always what you think it is.

We hate to say it but you can be any shape or size, tall, short, stiff, flexible, meat-free or meat-loving to enjoy the many benefits of yoga. Feel a bit better about yourself, be healthier & happier, feel less stressed, appease the back pain, leg pain, whatever pain or simply grab some me-time.

And you don’t have to indulge in a bit of OM unless you want to.

+ I'M NOT FLEXIBLE CAN I STILL DO YOGA?

That makes you perfect! Thinking you need to be flexible before you start yoga is a little bit like thinking you need to be able to drive before taking driving lessons. Come as you are and yoga will help you do the rest. You’re not the first to think it and you won’t be the last.

+ How do I know which class to choose?

If you’ve never done any yoga before choose a class with Beginners or Basics in the title. In our Beginners’ classes and courses we slow things right down and give you loads of help and instruction.

After a few classes, or if you’ve done some yoga before, you can come to any of our classes. We guarantee you’ll get the yoga bug and become a regular visitor.

Still not sure? Click on the name of the class in the Timetable and a description of that class pops up!

+ How do I cancel my class?

If you find you can’t make it to class after you’ve booked you can cancel up to three hours before the start time of your class and you’ll have that pass to use again. Cancellations made within three hours of the start time of class will be charged in full.

If it's a Morning Mysore style class you've booked you can cancel up to 12 hours before the start time of your class and you’ll have that pass to use again. Cancellations made within 12 hours of the start time of class will be charged in full.

+ Do you have mats and props to borrow?

We have a limited number of yoga mats to borrow, but suggest you bring your own if you can. We also have blocks, straps & blankets.

+ What should I wear?

Wear anything that’s comfortable and allows you to move about - sweat pants, leggings or shorts and a t-shirt that’s not too baggy. If you have sports gear that’s great too. No special footwear’s needed as you’ll be barefoot.

We also suggest you wear layers - we’re still opening the windows during class!

+ Do you have a changing room / shower?

Our changing room is small and mixed. If you do need privacy you can use the toilet or the shower room.

+ What’s the difference between a beginners course and a beginners class?

Our courses are specially structured to build and develop your knowledge and experience every week. To get the most from a course it’s best if you can make it along to every session of the course.

Our regular weekly beginners classes allow you to attend class whenever suits you. Over time your knowledge and experience will grow but progress will generally be slower than in our structured courses.

+ How much do classes cost?

Our selection of payment options offer value for money and flexibility in commitment! You’ll find our current pricing for individual classes, multi-class passes and unlimited passes here.

+ How do I pay?

While we’re working with COVID19 we’re only able to accept payment online.

+ What classes do your monthly passes include?

With one of our Unlimited Monthly Passes you can book into any regular class on our Timetable. Monthly passes do not cover workshops, events, teacher trainings or courses.

+ Can I sign up for the monthly auto renew even if I can’t commit to a year?

Our Monthly Auto Renew pass comes with a minimum three month commitment. After three months you can cancel at any time with 30 days notice in advance of your next payment date. Your membership may be paused for extended periods of absence due for example to injury or illness. Each request is dealt with on its own merits and the decision is at our discretion. Where classes are suspended by us for a week or more an extension of the same time period will be granted.

This monthly pass will automatically renew every month for 12 months. This means a regular payment will come out of your account on the same day each month.

+ How long do classes last?

Our classes are generally 75 minutes. There are a couple of exceptions - our lunchtime classes are 40 minutes and Sunday’s Ashtanga Led Primary is 90 minutes.

+ Why can’t I see tomorrow’s / next week’s classes on the Timetable?

You can select which day/week/month’s classes you view so, for example, if you’re looking for next week’s schedule click the right arrow button near the top of the display.

+ I’m interested in the Ashtanga Mysore style classes. Can I really start and finish at any time during the class?

Yes you can! As long as you leave enough time for your whole practice you can join the Mysore class at any time. We suggest you start no later 75 minutes before the finish time. Join the class with as little noise and disruption as possible, roll out your mat and get started.

+ Can I come to class if I’m pregnant?

While we don’t have any dedicated yoga for pregnancy classes all of our teachers are experienced with modifying postures to accommodate pregnancy. I’d suggest you start with any of the Beginners classes on the Timetable, come along a few minutes early to have a chat with the teacher. We suggest checking in with your GP/midwife first.

+ How do I book for someone else?

You can book for someone else right from the Timetable here on the website or our Ribbon schedule.

+ Can I cancel my booking for a workshop / course / event?

We will provide a full refund (less 10% admin fee) for a workshop, course or event to those who cancel 28 days before the workshop, course or event commences. After this time there will be no refund unless your place can be secured from a waiting list, in which case your fee will be refunded (less a 10% admin fee). Should the event be cancelled by MCY you will be offered a refund or alternatively credit be given to you against future events held by MCY.

We reserve the right to make changes to our programme, courses or teachers. Alternative arrangements are offered to the best of our ability but, if not taken up, we do not accept responsibility for any costs incurred, including travel costs.

+ Can you recommend any local accommodation?

There are a number of local accommodation options here in Merchant City. Merchant City Inn is right across the road from the studio, there’s an Ibis a couple of minutes walk away and a Premier Inn five minutes walk away, A cheap, cheerful and riskier option is Eurohostel – I know a few students have stayed there with mixed results!

For other options you can search Booking.Com or if you’re staying for longer you might prefer self-catering in which case I use Airbnb. You can search both using our postcode G1 1TS.

+ Do you offer 1-2-1 sessions?

We offer private sessions with a number of our teachers either online or in the studio.

Alternatively, if you're looking to build confidence before joining regular classes our structured Introduction courses are a great place to start. They’re six week courses where we build and develop your knowledge every week. We keep the group size small and everyone’s in the same boat.

+ Can you provide a teacher for a private group session(s)?

We can arrange to have one of our teachers take your session(s) in the studio. Availability is dependant on our regular class timetable. For classes in your own premises we put you in touch directly with one of our teachers. They’ll confirm costs and arrangements directly with you.

All of our teachers are carefully chosen for their experience and their commitment to practice.

Email us with details of your preferred date(s) and time(s) and what you’re looking for from the session(s) and we’ll take it from there.

+ Do you offer corporate yoga?

For classes in your own premises we put you in touch directly with one of our experienced teachers. All of our teachers are carefully chosen for their experience and their commitment to practice. Email us with details of your preferred day(s) and time(s) and what you’re looking for from the session(s) and we’ll take it from there.

Alternatively, we offer a specially discounted Corporate Five Class Block for our regular Lunchtime Yoga Basics classes at the studio.

+ Can I buy a gift voucher for MCY?

You can gift a class, pass or workshop when you check out!

+ Are the products in your shop available mail order?

We offer a small number of specially chosen yoga mats, books and accessories for sale in the studio. These can be purchased online but need to be collected from the studio.

+ Are there any teaching opportunities for yoga teachers at MCY?

We’re a small studio and generally prefer to use teachers who practice regularly with us. If you come in for class be sure to introduce yourself.

+ Where is MCY?

We’re in the heart of the city centre within The Jacobean Building, 49 Virginia Street Glasgow G1 1TS (behind The Corinthian and just up the road from the back door of M&S!). Only a five minute walk away from Central, Queen St & Argyle St Stations and St Enoch’s & Buchanan St Underground stations, and there’s loads of buses passing nearby too.

Take a look at our Find Us page for our location and should you need directions.

+ Is there parking nearby?

Street parking around MCY is free after 6pm every day. Monday – Sunday 8am-6pm metered parking in the immediate area is costly - find the current charges here.

That’s fine if you’re going to class at 6pm but not cheap if you’re in for a couple of hours on the weekend! If you’re here for longer it’s cheaper to park on the other side of High Street current charges are here.

If you’re coming to an event or workshop which is longer than an hour or two we reckon parking in the NCP King Street outdoor car park is the best value. There’s also the car park at St Enoch’s and there’s also a Q-Park near there too.
