Moving Mysore Style Classes Online

If I’m being honest it’s taken me a while to come around to the benefits of online Mysore style classes.

From the beginning I fully understood that meeting online was key to keeping our community connected despite not being able to meet in person. The routine of turning up at the same time for class is fundamental in helping us all cope during these uncertain and constantly changing times. It’s reassuring and heart warming to see familiar faces.

In terms of offering practical help and guidance for our asana (posture) practice though, I wasn’t so sure. The idea of offering a student individual instruction in an online class where it’s broadcast to everyone had me seriously doubting!

But as time’s gone on and it’s clear we won’t be able to meet in person again any time soon I’ve had to look again at my feelings, my thoughts and opinions, my own doubts and insecurites.

And here’s the thing. We all love teaching and you guys want to continue learning with us.

The circumstances we’ve found ourselves in over the last few months have given us all the opportunity to develop and explore our home practice. All of the resources we’ve been sharing with you have been designed to help and support you in doing this.

If you have been practising regularly on your own it’s likely you have some questions or are even feeling a bit stuck or fed up by now.

Or maybe during all of this you’ve really struggled to get on your mat despite your best efforts and intentions?

Coming to an online class where you can move through the practice at your own pace, with your own breath with the support of a teacher and knowing there are others there with you, you’re not in it alone, might be just what you need. Working together with us in a Mysore style class can help you move forward no matter where you are.

Here are a few reasons to try Mysore style Ashtanga classes online:

You learn and practice at your own pace

Just like in-person, online Mysore style classes allow you to move through the sequence in time with your own breath. Everyone practises the same sequence of postures at their own pace.

Practising this way gives you space and time. The teacher is not calling out the next posture or counting you through the practice. It’s just you, your breath and your yoga mat. There’s time for you to focus on postures or areas of the practice that you find challenging.

You’ll get one to one attention

The teacher will help you individually in a Mysore style class. Online they’ll assist you verbally and suggest ways of working with the postures that are most helpful to you. Their advice is completely tailored to your body and your practice.

This way of learning is the most effective way of making progress in your yoga practice. As you develop strength, stamina, flexibility and focus the teacher will help you move onto more challenging postures safely.

You’ll benefit from the support of an experienced teacher

Walking a well trodden path is always easier. Yes you’ll encounter your own challenges, this is an important part of the practice, but when you work with an experienced teacher you’ll be supported along the way.

Mysore style teachers are long time Ashtanga practitioners with many years of experience of practising those same postures and being assisted and supported by their own teachers.

Practising with others is easier

Since we began teaching live classes online one thing has stood out, community. We’re not quite sure how but that connection to the amazing MCY community is still there. Practising with others, even through the wonders of technology, is supportive and helps us through on days when practising feels difficult.

Online classes are what we have right now so let’s embrace them fully and get the most we can from them!

Rose Ann and I will each be offering a live Ashtanga Mysore style class every week. You can join me on Thursdays 5.30-7pm and Rose Ann on Saturdays 9-10.30am.

The same familiar assisted self practice format but you’re in your own living room!

This class is still the most effective way of making progress in your yoga practice. Working your way through the Ashtanga sequence at your own pace with your own breath, and when we give you advice or instruction it’s completely tailored to your body and your practice.

To join us we’re asking that you’ve practised Mysore style before and you’re familiar with Surya Namaskar A & B and the standing sequence of postures.

If you need a little reminder of the sequence of postures, remember we’ve got cheat sheets to help you. You can download them HERE.

Print out your cheat sheet and pop it under your mat to reference whenever you need it.
