Here we are…

Here we are and another year has come to a close.

How was your 2023? How are you feeling about the year ahead?

I’ve sat down here at my desk a few times now to try and write this article! I’d thought to share some reflections on the year just past and take a look ahead to 2024 because it’s important to recognise achievements and challenges overcome. And also to look forward. To lift my eyes to the horizon and see the directions I might like to head in, personally and professionally.

But if I’m being honest with you, the past year feels like a bit of a blur. I’m struggling to pick out what went well, the things I need to learn from, what to take with me into a new year and what’s best left behind. I can’t see clearly what I hope to achieve in 2024.

And as my deadline for this article looms large I think it’s okay for me to feel this way.

I was looking for some prompts (when stuck, just ask google!) to help me with the process of reflecting on the past year and this line popped out at me:

“Each year deserves a distinct place in your personal history.” *

It really speaks to me of paying attention. Of acknowledging that we’re constantly evolving and changing even when it doesn’t feel like it. It feels to me inherent in the process of seeing and recognising each year as unique that we slow down or stop, and give it the space it deserves. Recognising that every year is special when we choose to look in this way. Every year, whether we perceive it as good, bad or indifferent adds richness and colour to our personal story.

Another thought that’s rumbling around in my head is, it’s always the people who make the biggest difference to our life. But having said that, no-one else can grant you happiness, you need to find your own. You can’t place other people’s judgement above your own and no-one can tell you where you want to be, you need to trust yourself.

As I wrap this up I feel I’ve come full circle to the present moment. Like all the best teachers and books teach us, it’s really all we have. I’m sitting here and the sun has come out. I don’t know how long it’ll be bright so I’m going to grab the gift of right now and head outside with people I love.

Wishing you love and grace for the year ahead, wherever you find it and whoever you choose to share it with.
