What makes a yoga practice yoga? - James Boag, 'The Chai Sessions'

We've been doing online chai sessions, having a chat over a cuppa with some friends, since the deepest darkest days of lockdown.

During each chat, I’d always imagine that we were sitting face to face on the sofa in the studio. I was so excited to finally have the opportunity to do just that with James Boag recently and can now share our first ever in-person chai session here with you.

For those that don't know James, he is a good friend and regular visitor to Merchant City Yoga. He’s a particularly gifted yoga philosophy teacher, sharing these ancient teachings with us in a way that makes them really relevant and valuable in the modern day and age we live in.

We begin our chat by considering what all the stuff we do on our yoga mat, our yoga postures, have got to do with yoga. What makes a yoga practice yoga as opposed to sport or other movement practices?

James says, “Once one understands the principles of yoga then housework, gardening, playing football, basketball, visiting the temple of power (the weight lifting gym) or practising a martial art can all be yoga practices… Yoga is evenness, balance, integration.”

James goes on to explain some of these principles and suggests practical ways we can work with them to bring yoga into everything we do.

Pop the kettle on, get yourself comfy and come and join us.
