The Subtle Body, Mantra, Sound & Music - Tony Young, 'The Chai Sessions'

Tony is one of the specialist guest tutors on our 200 hour yoga teacher training programme here at Merchant City Yoga. He's been teaching as part of the CYS yoga teacher training for about 10 years and has been coming to Glasgow since 2015.

He's a teacher of meditation, mantra and the energetic or subtle yogic body. This is what he shares with our yoga teacher trainees in his sessions during the course.

But that's not all there is to Tony.

He also teaches music. He's a sound therapist and massage therapist. He's even an astrologer and a voluntary chaplain at Strathclyde University.

AND, wait for it...

He worked as PA to Stephen Sondheim for a year, on a Musical Theatre Course sponsored by Cameron Mackintosh!

Most recently, Tony has started a not for profit organisation called Good Vibrations. They are doing amazing work helping people learn and find some relaxation through music, sound and mediation.

Good Vibrations have worked with the charities Men Matter Scotland and Mentor Scotland. They're also looking to start working in the recovery cafes that run here in Glasgow this year.

LOTS of amazing work!

As I mentioned, Tony's sessions on our yoga teacher training programme explore the yogic body, sometimes called the subtle or energetic body.

We begin our chat by considering if these traditional, more esoteric systems of yoga are getting a little left behind in this modern age of yoga.

Tony explains just what we're talking about when we say energetic or subtle body. He says, "it's a lot more down-to-earth and practical than you might think." This knowledge, this framework can be used to explore and understand our human experience.

He takes us on a journey through the koshas (energetic sheaths of the body) and likens them to russian dolls or nesting dolls. For those that remember the advert, think 'the Ready Break glow'.

Tony also chats about the power of sound and the role music and mantra plays in healing and giving people a voice.

This is a fascinating chat you won’t want to miss.

Pop the kettle on, get yourself comfy and come and join us.
