3 Questions on Yoga Teacher Training Answered

Joining a Yoga Teacher Training programme is no small thing. It's a huge commitment and investment of time, energy and money.

Doing your research ahead of enrolment is so important. You'll want to make sure the course you choose covers everything you're looking to learn and prepare for in the future.

That said though, it's common to have doubts. Doubts about your practice and whether it's 'good enough' to join a yoga teacher training. Doubts about final assessments or even if a particular course is right for you.

I answer all these questions and more in the videos below. Watch them through, take notes and if you have any questions that are still unanswered please email me at judi@merchantcityyoga.com

Is Yoga Teacher Training at MCY for you?

People who join our Yoga Teacher Training programme here at MCY generally come for one of two reasons.

Some people are very clear that they'd like to teach and share yoga in formal class or one to one settings. Others are simply looking to develop their practice and understand more about this vast thing called yoga.

Either way, our 200 hour course is specially structured to help and support you. I explain more about the course structure and our approach in the video.

Is my yoga practice good enough?

When people are thinking about joining a Yoga Teacher Training programme questions like, "Is my yoga practice good enough?" and "Do I know enough about yoga?" come up all the time.

9 times out of 10 people who ask these questions are referring to their yoga posture practice. If these questions are at the front of your mind, let me put you at ease.

I'm more interested in hearing about your experience of your yoga practice than seeing how well you perform yoga postures. Where you need to be in your practice to join a Yoga Teacher Training programme is much more subjective than what postures you can or can't do.

Being able to do spectacular yoga postures is great but you don't have to be able to do them or even want to do them to join our Yoga Teacher Training here at MCY.

During the course we look for effort, change over time and a willingness to learn and experiment. If you choose to teach yoga after graduation, what you share will depend on what you're practising.

We help you build a good solid foundation to continue your practise or study after the course. I chat more about this and the role the Ashtanga yoga practice plays in our programme in the video.

Is there one big exam at the end of the yoga teacher training course?

One thing that really worries people who come and chat with me about joining our yoga teacher training programme is the prospect of assessments. Quite often there's concerns over having to do one big exam at the end of the course.

Let me reassure you all that there's no big exam, scary practical or final test at the end of our course here at MCY. Instead you'll be continually assessed across the 12 modules through practical and written assessments and assignments.

Each module you'll be given a number of assignments to complete based on what we've covered in that module. You'll then have the rest of the month to go away, absorb and practice what you've learned, do some research and complete your assignments for that module.

You hand in your assignments to me for marking during the next module. At the same time I'll return any previous assignments you've done back to you. I explain more about this in the video below but know that I don't fail you. Instead, if there's any issues, I'll give you clear guidance about what you've missed and invite you to resubmit your assignments.

These assignments are as much for your benefit as they are mine. For me, they give me an indication of how you are taking on what we are sharing and how it is landing with you. For you, the more you can put into them, the more you're going to get out of them. That will only help your practice and eventually your teaching if you decide you'd like to share what you know.

As the course is continually assessed, if you're struggling or something comes up we can address it at the time instead of at the end of the course.
